Pixel Mago for Canon - Unboxing & First impressions

PIXEL – Mago – HSS Flash Hands On Review (from http://flashhavoc.com/)

Pixel have released their first HSS enabled ETTL speedlite in the new Mago, and they are available now from an incredibly low $90. This is around half the price of the current comparable YongNuo YN-568EX II, and very likely the beginning of the end of premium prices normally associated with HSS enabled TTL hotshoe flashes. UPDATE – 1st November 2014 - PLEASE NOTE – Although the initial Mago flash units where providing quite good ETTL exposures, this has unfortunately gone backwards with later firmware updates. And there have been quite significant issues reported with ETTL exposures and consistency with E9A_003 and E9N_004 firmware version units. This is not uncommon with Pixel firmware updates, and no doubt Pixel will improve the firmware again in time. Though at this point it may depend on which model flash you receive as to how useful the ETTL exposures are. Please see the “Firmware Updates” section at the bottom of the page for more details on these flash model and firmware variations. Pixel MAGO The Mago are surprisingly well built for flashes of this price, better than YN-568EX II in a some ways. And also providing a few significant extra features like – 20-200mm zoom (compared to 24-105mm) External HV Battery Port USB Port for Firmware Updates LED Video Light High Definition Dot Matrix LCD Screen Quick Lock Foot In terms of functions, the Mago really only lack the basic manual S1 and S2 optic slave modes. UPDATE – S1 and S2 may now have been added with later firmware updates. More of an issue for some people though, will be the lack of compatibility with other third party TTL radio triggers like the YongNuo YN-622C (currently working in TTL, but not in remote manual) and Phottix Odin etc. The Mago should offer a great inexpensive HSS enabled option for Pixel King and King Pro users though. Also at the time of writing this the Mago are still a work in progress to some degree regarding some TTL exposures and a few other small quirks, which will all likely be resolved over time with new firmware. The Mago are 90% of the way there already, and completely usable, though Pixel can sometimes to take a bit of time to resolve things completely with new firmware updates. Hardware wise the Mago appear to be fairly well resolved (though there a few small issues as mentioned below). Otherwise the Mago are full power flashes, with fast recycle times etc, and very well built for the low price. - See more at: http://flashhavoc.com/pixel-mago-flash-review/#sthash.YiprO1Iq.dpuf

IKEA launches a new line of furniture with integrated wireless charging for phone (SRC: industryleadersmagazine.com)

A revolutionary range of furniture has been developed that can charge smartphones, which will help remove redundant elements and get rid of the cable clutter everywhere. Swedish furniture maker Ikea International has come out with a range of futuristic furniture with built-in wireless charging spots. The announcement was made on Sunday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The phone-boosting fittings include tables, desks, lamps and bedside cabinets. The wireless charging works through an energy induction transfer. The furniture needs to be connected to a power source. The new range will go on sale next month in Europe and North America followed by a global roll-out.
Battery power is still a major issue with most smartphone users. With constant app usage like location and video services, wireless charging on furniture or other everyday surfaces could be a welcome innovation as batteries tend to lose power faster than ever before. Ikea said it will also begin selling wireless charging kits to build into existing furniture, with a starting price of EUR30 ($33.60). Furniture with built-in wireless charging facilities will cost an additional EUR20. Jeanette Skjelmose, business area manager of lighting and wireless at Ikea said that during several researches and home visits it was found that people usually hate cable mess. They constantly worry about not finding the charger or running out of power. Ikea’s new innovative solutions, which assimilate both wireless charging and home furnishings, will help make home life a lot more simpler. The furniture giant’s launching of wireless charging functionality on some of its new furniture enhances the battle for a global wireless charging standard, of which there are at present three, all vying to become the global leaders. Ikea will equip its new range of furniture with Qi-certified wireless chargers. Qi is currently the leading global wireless charging standard from Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and makes wireless charging pads and other products. It is available in hotels, restaurants and cafes, airports as well as public locations worldwide. The Qi-standard is supported by smartphone makers like HTC, Samsung and Microsoft with more than 80 Qi-enabled smartphones. Currently, there are nearly 15 models of Qi-enabled cars and other Qi mobile accessories in the market. The two other big players in wireless charging are Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and the Alliance for wireless power, A4WP. In the U.S., the PMA standard is strong as it rolls out wireless charging facilities at Starbuck cafes and is also associated with Duracell Powermat, the supplier of wireless charging accessories. Qi charging technology works more with smartphones, but PMA charging technology has more availability in locations. Menno Treffers, WPC chairman revealed that IKEA is working on its grand vision of making home life better with innovative, stylish and expedient collection that will help consumers see the beauty and simplicity of wireless charging.
